Still in Shock. . .

Three people died and more than 170 were injured when a bomb went off at the Boston Marathon finish line about four hours after the 26.2 mile footrace began. Crowds of spectators, runners and police were there watching the finishers. The elite racers crossed the finish line about two hours before the blast. Crossing the finish line at 2:50 p.m. were the ordinary and more numerous athletes who were doing their personal best.

On April 15, 2013 was the Massachusetts state holiday of "Patriots' Day," commemorating the "shot heard 'round the world" fired in the battle of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts, on the opening day of America's War of Independence, April 19, 1775. Massachusetts celebrates Patriot Day on the third Monday of April. Patriots' Day is a double holiday because it is also "Marathon Monday." The Boston Marathon held on Patriots' Day is the second-oldest U.S. marathon, first run in 1897, and draws crowds of runners and spectators from around the world.

A sky chart cast for the moment of the first explosion shows the Sun at 25 Aries in conjunction with aggressive red planet Mars at 26 Aries. Out of 180 possible degrees they are less than one degree apart. This conjunction occurred in the chart's 9th house, which rules higher education, teaching, publishing, broadcasting and international travel and commerce: the cruxes where culture and thought are made public and passed along. This indicates that this was a "statement" bombing. The bombs, homemade, were intended to kill and maim in order to win publicity for the (as yet unknown) bombers, or win converts to their cause. Aries is also the sign that governs athletics.

Within a few degrees of the Sun-Mars conjunction is Venus, which had barely entered the sign of Taurus (0 degrees, 35 minutes and 20 seconds of Taurus), but the fact that Venus is in Taurus indicates that money may have been backing the perpetrators or motivating them. Venus in Taurus also signifies security. With reason, we will be hearing every minute about security until Venus enters Gemini on May 9.

Another striking configuration in this horoscope is a Y-shaped Yod or "Finger of God" aspect, which in a horoscope can be formed by any three planets. The "Yod" in this chart starts with Uranus in Aries and Jupiter in Gemini, two signs apart. Saturn in Scorpio in the 3rd house of communications is the base or "finger" of the Yod. This bombing is definitely a message. The bombers' grievances have been simmering for a long time. They were not willing to show themselves or build a reasonable case for their point of view, or prepare for public and democratic debate with their opposition. The best thing their minds could come up with was to set off bombs and kill innocent people. Of course nothing could be more cowardly and more unpersuasive.

Saturn in the third house makes me think that the bombers, rather than being international terrorists, are local people or are protesting local authority. The long-lasting transit called Uranus square Pluto, in force from 2012 until 2015, affects the entire world, but in U.S. politics is manifesting as two uncompromising political parties. The bomber or bombers are probably domestic partisan extremists. The Uranus square Pluto period will rock all infrastructures, whether visible or not, dislodging old habits and ideas. Obsolete ideas and structures will have to be rethought or rebuilt from the ground up.

History Repeating Itself

You don't need to be an astrologer to know that April 19, in fact the whole third week of April, is unfortunately associated with U.S. domestic mass killings and shooting rampages. On April 19, 1993, FBI agents attacked the Branch Davidian religious compound near Waco, Texas, with tear gas and tanks after a 50-day siege. Seventy-six people died. This act by the FBI is still widely criticized as an act of war by the U.S. government on its private citizens. On April 19, 1995, in an actual commemoration of the Waco massacre, a truck bomb at Oklahoma City's federal building killed 168 people and injured about 500. The Columbine High School shooting rampage in Littleton, Colorado, occurred on April 20, 1999. A single shooter took over NASA's Houston Space Center and killed a hostage and them himself on April 20, 1997. The horrible mass killing at Virginia Tech occurred April 16, 2007. Not all of these events were inspired by hatred for the federal government, but all listed events after 1993 were planned acts of rebellion against officialdom or authority. Astrologically these dates approach the cusp of Aries and Taurus, where driven, fiery Aries vibrations meet the solid rock of Taurus determination. But as I said, you don't need astrology to tell you we have developed here the habit of senseless violence.

At the 2013 Boston Marathon, on the 20th anniversary of the Waco massacre, a second bomb exploded at the finish line shortly after the first. A third possibly unrelated bomb exploded later at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum some miles away, and there are reports of a fourth bomb found that did not explode.
